The National Squib was designed in 1968 by Oliver Lee, to meet the need for an inexpensive general purpose Sailing Keel Boat for strict one design club racing and family sailing. The underwater lines of the hull are as fine as possible for good performance in light airs and yet with its flared topside and generous beam and a combined ballast ratio of 50%, gives stability and power to carry a full sail in the strongest of winds. The mast can be stepped by two persons without the need for crane aid. Squibs can be easily towed behind the average family car on specially designed trailers.
At the start of 2010 the Squib concept is as relevant today as it was nearly 50 years ago. The Squib has a very vibrant and strong class owners association there are now nearly 900 boats and over 30 established racing fleets, with current past and future world champions in numerous high performance sailing classes competing at the highest levels.
A new mould is now available for the National Squib, the 1st ever built for the class, improving the underwater hull design and quality, after a while all moulds begin to move and distort, so to have a new hull shape available is a fantastic achievement for the class and association.
The high quality hand lay-up GRP achieves consistent hull weights, balance and optimization. As the Squib is designed with a marine plywood system of floors and beams, buoyancy chambers and cockpit floor, special attention is given to this installation to ensure long term durability and which involves the careful installation and bonding of beams and chambers. In the case of the floor beams, each beam is glass fibre sheaved and then gel coated. The same method of resin and gel coat is applied to all chambers and floors, both internal and external so that it achieves no moisture absorption or weight increase in the open cockpit floor. In consultation with leading Squib sailors we have incorporated a comprehensive fitting out specification and rig.
The BPsailboats Squib have an enviable reputation for their quality build and finish. In a short period BPSailboats Squibs have achieved numerous racing successes, winning the championship and achieving 3 of the top ten boats in 2004/08 nationals.
The new hull will no doubt be faster, slightly smoother, lighter and better balanced, with BPsailboats in control the class looks to develop further into the future with a great builder, boat and sailors.
